The ladies went 7-1 with 3 games decided in International Tie Breakers.  Great defense, great pitching  and timely hitting were the key to the Unified Black.

The Homer Hawks Softball program continues to grow and this weekend kicked into high gear. Hawks Softball had teams scattered throughout the United States.  With 12 teams and over 150 young ladies in the program, the ability to get great exposure for the Lady Hawks has never been better.  No other program can tout what the Hawks are doing and have done in the past few years.  This weekend alone Hawk Teams were playing in Las Vegas, Nevada; Oklahoma City, OK; Detroit, Michigan; Blue Spring, Mo and Decatur, Illinois as well as in many other great tournaments around the country.

As the program continues to grow more and more young ladies are finding out why Homer Hawks Softball is the premier traveling softball program in the Midwest.  In Michigan alone, several colleges including University of Michigan, Wright State and others specifically named the Homer Hawks as the teams they came to see.  At least 5 players who were competing in Michigan, from the 16U Black, were named as being players colleges were interested in watching.

The Homer Hawks went to Moline to bring home a championship, instead the Hawks came home with 2 championships.  The 12U dominated their age bracket fighting all the way to the championship game beating the Heartland Mayhem by a score of 11-0.  The young Hawks were fantastic all weekend and stayed focused to go undefeated through out the tournament and get their NSA Northern National Bid.

The 14U Hawk Black wanted to follow in the younger Hawks stapes and come home also with a championship.  They did just that by beating the Blue Devils of Burlington, Iowa by a score of 5-1 and earning a berth to the ASA Northern Nationals in St. Louis, Missouri.

HAWKS ARE PERFECT - WIN CROWN POINT TOURNEY
Vizza Pitches Perfect Game To Win Championship

The Homer Hawk 14U Black go 6-0 to win Crown Point, IN tournament this weekend.  The tough Hawks battled thru bad weather and some tough teams to win.  Starting Saturday with rain pouring all day, the Hawks took on the Lincoln-Way Storm and came away with an 8-2 win.  Then it was on to play the always tough Hawks '95.  Hawks Black came away with a victory fighting off the younger Hawks by a 7-2 score before battling the Crown Point Bulldogs 3-2.  All the games Saturday were marred with continuous rain and less than ideal conditions. However Sunday's weather as well as the Hawks offense took on a much better look and feel.  The Hawks first opponent was the CP Bulldogs again, this time beating them back 10-2.  Up next were the L.W. Storm.  The Hawks bats were again on fire lighting up the score board with a win and a finally tally of 13-3.

VIZZA IS PERFECT IN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

As the Hawks headed into the championship game they knew that had to keep up their hitting streak and must pitch a great game against a the Bulldogs who can rack up some runs quickly.  The Hawks did not disappoint.  The ladies came out on fire scoring 4 runs in the first inning while having the stalwart pitcher Kristina Vizza work her magic on the mound.  As the game progressed and the bats continued to rack up runs, it was clear that Vizza was on a roll.  In the end the Hawks rolled to a 15-0 Championship victory, with Vizza striking out 6 and not allowing any runs or walking any of her opponents... A PERFECT GAME.  Congratulations Hawks, good luck next week in Moline.

HAWKS PREDICT THE BIG WINNER IN MOLINE. . .
MOLINE'S LESS FORTUNATE WITH THE HELP OF RIVER BEND FOOD BANK!!

Often times we get caught up in our daily lives and forget about those who are in need of assistance.  But this weekend softball families and their daughters from across the state will not only be swinging bats and catching fly balls, but will be working with tournament directors Charlie McGuire and Mike Pannell of the Midwest Sluggers to help stock up the River Bend Food bank.

HAWKS FOOD DRIVE CONTEST COMING TO HELP MOLINE AREA

Five Hawk teams are beginning to sharpen their skills for the Moline tournament and descend on Moline to not only compete for a softball championship, but more importantly to see which team will be crowned The Homer Hawks Food Drive Champion.  Each team will compete to see which will bring the most perishable items to the Tournament.   Which Team will rise to the challenge?  We don't know... but we do know who will win this weekend... the less fortunate in and around the community of Moline.  So Come on Hawks, its time to step up to the challenge.

HAWKS BONEZEK GREAT ADDITION FOR TINLEY PARK

March 20, 2008
BY TONY BARANEK STAFF WRITER

Newcomers are appearing at all ages at Tinley Park, where freshman third baseman Stacie Bonezek is expected to make an immediate impact on the varsity, and junior shortstop/pitcher Elle Gerdes has transferred in from Sandburg.

A transfer? From Sandburg to Tinley?

"I didn't think I'd ever say those words," Titans coach Sheila Reed said. "Obviously, we're very happy to have her."

Gerdes played part of her sophomore season on the varsity at Sandburg, where she was more or less the designated runner.

"I remember reading about her being a selfless player and doing what needed to be done to help the team," Reed said. "That stuck in my mind about her from the personality standpoint more than even her skills."

Gerdes is projected to be the starting shortstop, but will also serve as the No. 2 pitcher behind senior Paige Swaim. Swaim, who was All-South Suburban Blue and posted a 2.44 ERA in 2007, will play next year at Millikin University.

Meanwhile, Bonezek is wowing Reed with her work at third base.

"She's just a natural," Reed said. "She's got great reflexes, and a natural-looking swing. She amazes me every day." (Bonzek has help the Titans even on April 1st with an impressive 3 run Homerun, a triple and another hit that almost made it out of the park - and that's no April Fools joke.

HAWKS McGUIRE CONTRIBUTES TO BENET VICTORY
Nora McGuire And The Benet Redwings Top Neuqua Valley

Benet's Nora McGuire is called safe after sliding past Neuqua Valleythird baseman Amanda Mener during Benet's 8-7 win.
(Kate Szrom/Naperville Sun)

(Article From the Naperville Sun Website)

"There's not a lot to say."

With a big smile on his face, Benet coach Jerry Schilf offered up those words following an 8-7 victory over Neuqua Valley in the season opener for both teams on Monday.

As Schilf watched his team begin to unroll the massive black tarp that will protect the infield from the elements this week, he laughed and shrugged his shoulders.

The coach had a point. Although the Redwings (1-0) escaped the game against the Wildcats (0-1) with a win, they didn't do it in Hollywood fashion.

Benet had just three hits, but the team played good defense and took advantage of the Wildcats' 11 errors when it mattered. All of Benet's eight runs came courtesy of Neuqua's gaffes.

The errors began in the bottom of the second inning, when Benet freshman Nora McGuire scored thanks to a dropped ball at first base. But the mistakes really took a turn for the worst in the bottom of the third when the Redwings scored five straight runs off five straight Neuqua miscues. Benet never lost the lead after that.

The Redwings had no errors in the field and got hits from McGuire, Courtney Makowski and Kaitlin Coari.

"Our hitting wasn't where we wanted it to be," McGuire said. "We just got lucky and played good defense."

FORMER HOMER HAWK GIBBS SETS SYRACUSE RECORD
Hallie Gibbs Shines Despite Loses - Goes Deep On Very First At-Bat for Orangeman.

WACO, TEXAS (Article From the SU Website) The Orange softball team opened the 2008 campaign with a pair of loses on Friday at the Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor. SU first game ended in dramatic fashion with Centenary (1-7) just sneaking by with a 4-3 win. During game two, No. 7/10 Baylor (1-0) got the best of the Orange, 8-0, in six innings.

"We just keep talking about that each day that we just have to get better and better," said head coach Leigh Ross. "Whatever happens in each game we just have to take it and process it. Instead of practicing and evaluating, now we've played two games and we can see our strong and weak areas."

Third baseman Hallie Gibbs began her career with a bang by going deep on her very first career at-bat, becoming the first SU freshman to accomplish the feat. Gibbs also made an impact defensively by handling two difficult groundballs during the second game. She fielded a hard-hit ball down the leftfield line on a backhand and threw to junior first baseman Nicole Miller – the throw ended the first inning and left one Baylor runner stranded.

Her second defensive beauty came in the second when she cut off a ball that was headed threw the left side. Gibbs then made a running throw just in time to get the runner.

"You can just see the potential in Hallie," said associate head coach Kyle Jamieson. "She hit the home run in the first game and then hit a foul ball even further in the second game – this is just her first day of collegiate ball." Congrats Hallie and keep up the great work.

HAWKS 14U WIN NSA "A" TOURNEY
Knock off Tough Rockers to Team to Win

Tinley Park, Illinois - The Homer Hawks 14U came thru in the end by making one of the greatest come backs seen in fastpitch softball in a long, long time.

Down 3-0 to a very dangerous Lemont Rocker team, the Hawks 14U team pounded out 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning with 1 out to win. Nora McGuire took a 2 and 0 pitch deep top start the scoring off.  Next up was Alyssa Poole who followed up with a mammoth double to put another run in scoring position. Laura Godlewski, then hammered a pitch up the middle scoring Poole. Laura then moves to 2nd on the throw home and again the Hawks are looking to add more to the score board.

Sensing that the Hawks are making their move, the always wise Rockers decide to change pitchers. Despite the change, up steps Morgan Moseley, who jacks a walk off 2 run homerun to lead her team to victory. This game proved that there are too many outstanding plays to mention, but none-the-less we will try to accomplish it. The Hawks with Ninja like defense from the great Molly Ely and Caitlyn Warren stifled the Rockers. Gabby D'oronzo's stone cold bunting added more frustration for the opponent and Katie Golich head's up play at 2nd base also proved to be a key ingredient for the Hawks success.  Those key players and players combined with critical catches by Danielle Graca and Mel Lambert and success would not be denied this day. In addition Bekka Houda brought the Hawks to the championship with her incredible pitching along side  Tori Larson was once again errorless in field.

What an incredible team effort. A Great memorable victory against a very game opponent that had schooled us just 2 weeks ago.
GREAT JOB HAWKS!
