Hawks 16u Teal Battle In Las Vegas

The 16u Teal played in an 18and under College Exposure Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada June 14th and 15th.  They battled the older teams and 103 degree heat to a 3 – 2 record, an outstanding achievement.

On Saturday the Hawks played the Washington MsStix, coming out on top 5-4. The ladies from Washington scored one in the first but the Hawks answered with two. Tess Erwinski and Lauren Wells scored on a hit by Lauren Hickey. The MsStix battled for two in their half of the second. But the Hawks fought back with one. Taylor Snooks, running for eventual winning pitcher Kelly Bowler, scored on an absolutely perfect bunt by Dana Owens to tie the game.  Here come the Ms Stix, they scored in their half of the third, but the Hawks answered with two when Erwinski and Wells both singled and were driven in by Anna Marie Mitchell and Katie Paulmeyer.  Amy Narotsky closed the game earning the save.

The Seattle Blaze were up next and the Hawks jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as Ashlee Needy, Lauren Wells and Lauren Hickey were driven in by Katie Paulmeyer and Gianna Sunta. Ashley Yanahan scored on an Ashlee Needy double in the second and the Hawks hung on for a 4-3 win. Amy Narotsky was the winning pitcher with Lauren Wells closing and Taylor Snooks getting the web gem award with a diving catch in centerfield and solid defense by Dana Owens at first.

Sunday morning started a little tougher facing the Thunder from Washington. The Hawks led early, scoring on some opposition miscues and heads up base running. The Thunder came back on a bloop single and a couple of slow roller infield hits before they broke the game open. The Hawks battled back with a Tess Erwinski triple but could not get her in. Still working hard they loaded the bases with singles by Katie Paulmeyer, Gianna Sunta, and Taylor Snooks but could not score.  Hawks ended up losing 8-2.  Next they faced the Colorado QuickSilver with several D-1 scholarship players. The Hawks fell behind 7-0 after 2 innings but shut down the Colorado offense and fought back with a run to fall 7-1.

The last game of the tournament was against the Southern California Mirage.  The Hawks scored in the first on a Ashley Yanahan single and a Lauren Wells triple and that’s all they needed as Kelly Bowler pitched a shutout. Katie Paulmeyer was the defensive star, snaring a hot shot at third with a runner in scoring position. Anna Marie Mitchell and Ashlee Needy split the catching duties in the triple digit heat.

The Hawks played hard against quality opponents and the results are a feather in their cap.

Eight different players scored.  Kelly Bowler scattered 5 hits for the hard fought win.

The sweep of their pool gave the Hawks a bye in the first round of single elimination.

Their first opponent was the Naperville Diamonds.  Things started off a little dicey as the Diamonds first two runners reached base.  After a strikeout for the first out, with runners on 2nd and 3rd the Diamond batter laid down a bunt on the 3rd base line. Katie Paulmeyer fielded the ball, checked the runner back and fired to Ashley Needy covering first for the out. Ashley then threw a strike to Anna Marie Mitchell who tagged the runner out at home for the inning ending double play.  The Hawks twice showed their determination coming from behind and then forging ahead with big two out hits.  Following Amy Narotsky’s double, Lauren Wells had a two out hit to drive in the tying run. In the 4th   inning, tied 2-2, with two outs and nobody on, Gianna Sunta hit a smash down the 3rd base line, and Ashley Needy followed with another single.
